Ku Ding Tea (AKA kǔdīng chá; literally “bitter piece tea”) is a famous, cleansing Chinese tea made from Ligustrum robustum (wax tree) and Ilex kudingcha (holly species). The leaves are twisted into a “rope” shape resembling a nail. Former varieties are common in Sichuan and Japan, while the latter is mainly grown in Yunnan, Hainan, and Fujian provinces. “Ku” means bitter (describing the taste), and “ding” means nail (indicating the dry leaf shape).
First sip brings strong bitterness that numbs the tongue, followed by a bitter-sweet note like fresh bitter melon and a cooling sensation for the face, eyes, and throat. It contains over 200 compounds like kuding saponins, amino acids, vitamin C, polyphenols, and flavonoids.
As a health tea, it’s renowned for promoting weight loss, lowering blood pressure, detoxifying the liver, improving eyesight, quenching thirst, and enhancing blood circulation. It’s also called “health tea,” “beauty tea,” or “longevity tea.”
Brewing Tips: Use boiling water (preferably mineral or spring water), porcelain/ceramic teaware, and only 1-2 leaves (it’s highly concentrated). First infusion should be steeped for 30s-1min; bitterness increases with steeping time. Reuse leaves multiple times.
