It was in 1830 that Earl is said to have a Chinese gentleman to find a solution to the Earl’s Tea Problem…bad water. Apparently there was too much lime in the water giving the Earl’s tea a peculiar aroma and flavor.
The solution was eventually found by adding the oil extracted from a Mediterranean citrus fruit called Bergamot and applying it to the tealeaves.
Bergamot is an oily substance extracted from the rind of a dwarf variety of the Seville Orange tree.
Guests of Howick Hall, the Earl’s post, were served the oil-infused tea and were impressed with its uniqueness. It did not take long for gusts to begin referring to the first Flavored Tea as Earl Grey Tea...
