Description
Bodegas Riojanas, first established in 1890 by the Artacho Family, is one of Rioja’s most historic names and a benchmark for what a traditional Gran Reserva. With close to 150 years of heritage, the estate has long been lauded for its classic style. Opting to base their winery close to where they grow their Tempranillo vines in Cenicero (20 Mins SE of Haro), quality and terroir are, and have always been a priority. The 2001 vintage for the region of Rioja is considered one of the most important and even legendary years in the new century so far. This is even more true for the subregion of Rioja Alta (where Monte Real is located).
This Gran Reserva has spent approximately 2.5 years in well seasoned American Oak before being bottled, whereafter it spends another 3 years in bottle before it was released. This however is a late release. Notes of dried black cherries, leather, dried tobacco, truffle, with a structure still framed with generous, yet gentle tannins, and an acidity that can go another 5-10 years in bottle. Pair this with a rich mushroom ragu, Paella Valenciana or perhaps even a dark chocolate tart, hm….
