Earl Grey offers a robust Bergamot aroma and medium body, leading to a pleasant aftertaste that compels you to want more…lovely. Our pyramid-shaped teabags give the leaves room to expand and infuse the cup with a strong, distinct, and flavorful amber-colored tea broth.
It was in 1830 that the Earl is said to have asked a Chinese gentleman to find a solution to the Earl’s Tea Problem…bad water. Apparently, there was too much lime in the water, giving the Earl’s tea a peculiar aroma and flavor.
The solution was eventually found by adding the oil extracted from a Mediterranean citrus fruit called Bergamot to the tealeaves. Bergamot is an oily substance extracted from the rind of a dwarf variety of the Seville Orange tree. This oil is what gives Earl Grey its token aroma and flavor. You will smell the bergamot as soon as you open the pouch of teabags.
